Winter finals REPORT
Saturday 14th march 2015
Magnificent Tennis, magnificent turnout and magnificent food.
The weather was kind, the tennis competitive, the food very tasty and the mood convivial, all in all it was a very pleasant Winter Finals day at WSTC.
NEW KIDS
'New kids' on the veterans block Roger and Rory won the Men's Veterans final against Doug Smit and Peter Gibson, Roger (is he old enough to be a vet?) going on to a clean sweep winning a hard fought singles against David Johnson and finishing off the afternoon winning the mixed doubles with Fran Nowlan in front of a partisan crowd. We Brits love the underdogs and Lynne Morling and Colin Knights were loudly cheered on every point they won, the crowd were mostly silent, despite Lynne's battling play.
INJURED
An injured Mel Redman bravely played and won through with Lena Kirby to win yet another Ladies Doubles title against Claire Marks and Emily Woodhouse but in the mixed doubles Duncan Foster and Lena proved too strong for Mel and Simon Heilpen.
In the Men's doubles, the youth and exuberance of Duncan and Simon lost out to the guile of the silver foxes Mike Henry and Neil Howard.
Well played everyone.
RESIDENT CHEF de CUISINE
On a cold day a welcome lunch of chilli, rice or wraps, topped with cheese, guacamole, fresh chilli, sour cream, coriander and nachos was served and very tasty it was too. Thanks to our resident Chef de Cuisine Rory, a sterling effort and much appreciated by all. See below to download recipe.
HELPERS
Many thanks to the cake, biscuit and flapjack makers, Louise, Richard, Nina (or was it Doug?) a special thanks to Diana Hewitt for her 'greasy' tray bake and WSTC's very own sommelier Danny for keeping the wine flowing.
Thanks for all those who turned up to support the players on a cold day and those who helped to clean and wash up, a good team effort, also Glenn for sorting out the scoring system and being the official photographer and last but not least Denise the queen of the tea towel and red wine for all her sterling help on the day.
