Denise's Surprise Birthday Bash...
Members (of all ages) got together on a Summer‘s evening in August to celebrate Denise’s 70th Birthday. Well done to the membership for keeping the event a total surprise to Denise (who was expecting a committee evening). We know this for sure as she turned up in her bowls gear which she’d been wearing that afternoon. The evening was orchestrated by Emily W (Denise’s midweek tennis partner), with the help of Lena Kirby and Sue WW. David Kirby cooked the most delicious paella, on site, in keeping with the Spanish theme (for those who don’t know, Lew Hoad in Spain is her West Surrey in the sun when the weather turns here). Individuals (too many to be named) turned up with sumptuous tapas dishes and sangria was probably the most popular drink of the evening. Of course no tennis club evening is complete without DJ Neil; we enjoyed tunes from the Gypsy Kings to Enrique Iglesias. To top it all, Susan Page made a jaw droppingly gorgeous cake which indeed tasted as good as it looked.
It was our real pleasure to wish Denise well for her next decade and to acknowledge the amount she does for us at West Surrey (she can be credited for serving on the committee ever since she joined the club in the late 70’s). It was right that we remembered her late husband, Bob, and it was a joy to have Adrian, her son, in our midst. As you can imagine there were plenty of tears shed from our birthday girl!
